What the Hype Index Measures

The AI Hype Index is a single number from 0 to 100 that captures how much of the AI industry's public narrative is backed by real substance. It aggregates the hype gap scores of hundreds of companies into one daily reading.

How to read the scale

0 - 30Low hype. The industry is mostly grounded — companies are delivering on their claims with verifiable output.
30 - 60Moderate hype. A healthy mix of ambition and execution, but some companies are outpacing their delivery with marketing.
60 - 80High hype. Marketing narratives are running significantly ahead of measurable results. Caution warranted.
80 - 100Extreme hype. The gap between what companies say and what they deliver is at its widest. Historically a precursor to corrections.

The index is calculated daily from the individual hype gap scores of all tracked companies. Each company's hype gap compares its Hype Score (marketing events, press releases, claim density) against its Reality Score (product launches, funding rounds, research publications, technical partnerships). The aggregate index reflects the overall balance of the industry.
