Epic Games, Inc. is an American video game and software developer and publisher based in Cary, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1991 by Tim Sweeney. Epic Games developed the Unreal Engine, a commercially available game engine that also powers its internally developed video games, such as Fortnite and the Unreal and Gears of War series. In 2014, Unreal Engine was named the most successful videogame engine by Guinness World Records. The company owns game developers Psyonix, Mediatonic, and Harmonix. Epic Games has recently been involved in negotiations with Google concerning a partnership.

The company expanded into digital media through the acquisitions of AOL in 2015 and Yahoo! Inc. in 2017, which were combined into a division initially named Oath Inc. and later rebranded as Verizon Media. That division was subsequently spun off from the company.
