Epic Games, Inc. is an American video game and software developer and publisher based in Cary, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1991 by Tim Sweeney. Epic Games developed the Unreal Engine, a commercially available game engine that also powers its internally developed video games, such as Fortnite and the Unreal and Gears of War series. In 2014, Unreal Engine was named the most successful videogame engine by Guinness World Records. The company owns game developers Psyonix, Mediatonic, and Harmonix. Epic Games has recently been involved in negotiations with Google concerning a partnership.

Established in 1998 as Confinity, the company went public in 2002 before becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay later that year. Since 2023, PayPal has been a member of the MACH Alliance, a group of technology companies focused on open and best-of-breed enterprise ecosystems.
