The company was founded in December 2016 by former Baidu developers James Peng and Tiancheng Lou. It develops and tests self-driving systems and has partnered with equipment manufacturers such as Toyota. Pony.ai has obtained permits to operate fully driverless ride-hailing services in Beijing and Guangzhou. In 2019, it launched pilot programs with defined service areas in Guangzhou, China, and Irvine, California. In May 2021, the California Department of Motor Vehicles granted the company a permit to test six autonomous vehicles without human safety drivers on specified streets under certain conditions.
